Itinerary description
A pleasant little hike in the Orvieto and Lago di Bolsena area. Overall it’s a more relaxing one, yet, the small but comparatively steep incline up into the village of Benano will require reasonable fitness. No F&B on the hike.
Hiking shoes or proper hiking sandals are much recommended, as you will walk on gravel tracks and forest trails.
On your way you will walk through Oak and Horse Chestnut forest, pass a natural source with clear and cold water, get views of Orvieto valley as well as occasionally see Orvieto in the distance. Some small olive groves and old country houses add to the variety. And, depending on the time of the year and day, you make see flocks of colorful Bee Eaters flying above you and singing their distinct song.
Best if you start the loop two hours before sunset to get the most pleasing light (same for early morning for those that fancy).
On your way back (by car) make sure to plan in a Pizza dinner at Castel Giorgio’s “La Baracca”. Many trips to Italy haven’t offered me better thin crust and pure style Pizza.
