Carlisle - Bowness-on-Solway : Stage 6 Hadrian's Wall - North Sea to Irish Sea crossing 2024-06-13 8:24
In this last stage we will enter the Eden River estuary.
In the final section of the stage we walk through areas that are prone to flooding, they warn you of the low and high tide times and warn cars and pedestrians that everything can be a few feet under water. The Roman Wall has disappeared completely, but remains of its castings remain, a spectacular amount of earth movement. It seems that this was the first section to be built.
Halfway, and to our surprise, we start to find some walkers in the opposite direction, in a group, practically all with the same personalized shirt and others dressed as Roman legionnaires, very nice... they are a whole bunch who tell us that they will do Hadrian's Wall Path in four days.
At one point we reach a place where the river becomes very, very wide. It starts to rain for real, like we haven't seen before. It is a place where there used to be even an industrial port, of which some remains remain. As we walk in the rain - some colleagues with umbrellas -, we see that the water in the river is going down little by little... we are going at low tide altogether. We pass in front of the house where we will stay and continue until we reach the point where the Hadrian's Wall Path officially ends and begins. We succeeded!!. We take a picture in the rain. We wait for the time to enter the accommodation (they are strict about this) and a couple arrives who also finishes the tour, they take out two glasses and a bottle of wine and celebrate.
We are staying at the “Shore Gate House Hotel”, a really lovely place. Our room is low-ceilinged, under thatched roof, with a large window overlooking the estuary. Over the course of the hours we will see the water rise to a very high level, and then go down. The days have been very long, as we are much further north than Barcelona. We had dinner at a restaurant-pub in the small town, with a very good atmosphere and very attentive service. The breakfast was very encouraging, very well served and the owners very nice.
