Itinerary description
The southern portion of the Mantario Trail (from the southern trail head to Caribou Lake and back) can be done as a day hike. While people hiking the whole trail would travel around the East side of the lake, this route goes to the original (Western) Caribou Lake campsite.
This trail is rated as difficult due to the terrain and distance.
Some years ago, the Mantario Trail was re-routed from the West side of Caribou Lake to the East side. You can hike to the East campsite instead, but it will add about 3 miles to your trip.
In 2016 there was a large forest fire that burned a good portion of the forest from the second railroad crossing to the lake. Thankfully the West campsite was relatively untouched and provides a good destination for this hike.
