Cardiff Bay is located in south Wales, where the rivers Taff and Ely intersect to form a lake. Cardiff Bay is a promenade built around a 200-hectare freshwater lake known as 'the bay'. There you can find a great mix of attractions, entertainment, along with restaurants.
Cardiff Bay played an important role in the development of the city as the means of exporting coal from the valleys of South Wales, helping the development of the industrial age. The coal mining industry helped finance the construction of Cardiff, and helped the 3rd Marquess of Bute, who owned the docks, become the richest man in the world at the time.
As Cardiff's exports grew, so did its population, dockers and sailors from around the world settled in neighborhoods near the docks, known as Tiger Bay.
After World War II most of the industry closed and fell into ruins. But, in 1999, a new life is injected into the area by the construction of the Cardiff Bay Dam, one of the most controversial projects not only for its construction but also for its success.
