Osumi cannon. corovode. Albanian Alps. Albanian

The Osum canyon (Kanioni i Osumit) is one of the most amazing gorges in the entire Balkans. It is not for nothing that it is known as the "Grand Canyon of the Colorado" of Albania. Located in the south of Albania, near the city of Çorodova, in the Skrapar region.

Many adventurers come to these gorges to see their landscape, and incidentally take advantage of rafting. The descent has as scenarios immense vertical walls of 100 meters. The rocky landscape alternates pine forests, Mediterranean shrubs such as heather and heather, and river meanders, with suggestive points such as those called the "cathedral", "crocodile head", "love waterfall" or "devil's door", formations resulting from erosion.

The gorge is 26 km long, with a width that varies from 1.5 meters wide to 35 m. The gorges are believed to have been formed 2-3 million years ago by water erosion. There are many unexplored underground passages and caves along the gorge, and in fact it is thought that initially the river flowed underground, but over time the caverns collapsed, leaving the river course in the open air.

The viewpoints that offer views of the Osumi Canyon are spectacular. You can do without rafting, descent, the beach... but not these viewpoints.

The three viewpoints that we are going to explain are perfect for seeing the different parts of the canyon, because they all have parking at the entrance or path that leads to the viewpoints and second, they are right on the edge of the main road.

Wooden bridge of the Osumi Canyon. If you arrive at the Osumi Canyon from Berat (which is usually the logical thing to do) you will first come across the Osumi Viewpoint, a metal walkway that will leave you flying above the valley.

After the Vrima Viewpoint, this is an esplanade surrounded by nature that will allow you to see not only the groove that makes up the Osumi Valley, but also its curves and the small towns built on the other side of the canyon.

Finally, the Wooden Bridge Viewpoint, has impressive views of the canyon, the bridge places you just above the Osumi River and allows you to see a large part of the valley. See its super clear blue water, since the sediment is marble dust and being this white allows you to create that color.

Like the viewpoints, a walk along the wooden walkway, combined with stone paths, is perfect for going down to Osumi Canyon. During this part of the walk, of less than 1 kilometer, you will be able to appreciate the height of the walls of the valley and get beautiful panoramic photos.

The valley also has its own beach. A beach of large white stones where you can end the day by taking a bath in summer or taking a walk along its "shore" in winter.

During the spring, the waters of the melted snow allow you to explore the entire gorge from the river practicing rafting. Spring is also the best time to see the many waterfalls in the gorges. The rapids are Class II, so no prior whitewater experience is necessary to navigate them. At the end of the summer, when the water is lower, it is not possible to navigate the entire gorge, but there are pools that allow swimming.

The organized activity usually starts from Berat (where the Osum river passes), with a two-hour journey to the rafting start. Equipped with a helmet, vest and neoprene suit and of course oars, we will descend the river releasing all the adrenaline.
