Lengarica Canyon. Banjat e Benjës. Albanian Alps. Albanian
The beautiful Lengarica Canyon is located in the Fir of Hotova National Park, Permet. During the exploration we will see several caves and the most impressive is the Cueva de las Palomas with 160 meters long. At the beginning of the canyon is a stone bridge built in the Middle Ages, which has allowed people to cross the sulfur-rich river since the time of the Ottoman Empire.
Although not as long as Osumi Canyon, Lengarica Canyon is not short on beauty. This 5 km long canyon will amaze you with its combination of ancient rock formations and the water that flows through them.
Access to Lengarica Canyon from Ksamil or Gjirokastra is accessible to all vehicles. The roads are paved and passable. The road may have potholes and narrowing, but these are rare.
It is a round trip route. The first part by mountain and the return by the river bed. You will have to swim some parts of the way, most likely, even in hot summer. In periods of snowmelt or rain, I would advise against walking along the riverbed. Of course, in any case, you should take care to have a waterproof backpack to carry your electronic devices.
The attraction of the Lengarica Canyon is twofold: on the one hand, the spectacular setting of the canyon itself, on the other, the steaming waters of its famous hot springs. While the purported healing properties of the thermal baths seem to be the main draw (at least among the locals), they are simply a sweet addition to the adventures that await beyond the puffs of sulfur that rise from their springs. The gorge walls rise higher and closer, curious hikers will find an untouched kingdom of exceptional beauty, carved into the ancient limestone rock.
