We are going to enter one of the most closed canyons in Albania, we are going to explore the Holta Canyon (Holtë or Holtës). It is located south of the small town of Elbasan, in central Albania.
To get to the canyon we have to follow a gravel track, and before the entrance we find some thermal pools, which take advantage of the thermal springs of the river. The entrance to the canyon is very closed, and we enter with river shoes, since the water we are stepping in is so milky and opaque that we cannot see where we are stepping even if it only covers a hand's breadth.
The river has beautiful parts between the vertical limestone rock walls, there are also some thermal springs at the beginning of the canyon, although it does not provide enough hot water to heat the river water, which is cool, which we are grateful for on this extra day. of 30º.
As we progress up the river, the canyon, which already seemed narrow to us, becomes narrower and narrower, to points where we can hardly see the sky above us. Here the shapes of the canyon and rock are even more spectacular. However, due to the closed nature of the canyon, very little sunlight reaches here and this translates into an extreme drop in temperatures compared to the outside, making it cold even for Patry with neoprene included...
Thus we reach a point where we would have to swim through a fairly deep pool, and we take it as the final point where we turn back due to the cold, which is already becoming difficult to bear before even having to fully immerse ourselves in the cold water.
Being in this canyon is a truly incredible experience, with its vertical walls of whimsical shapes, it becomes a magical place. However, we recommend preparing well to visit it:
1_make sure that the river is not going to receive water, because a rise can be very dangerous
2_Wear neoprene and closed shoes since the temperature drops a lot
3_wear a helmet because of falling stones
We leave you a video where you can feel the intensity of the canyon more:
