Itinerary description
Shenandoah National Park. 4.4 mile hike to Camp Hoover(originally called Camp Rapidan)and direct return. From Milam Gap Parking area, between Mile Marker 52 & 53, on the west side of the Skyline drive, follow AT (Appalachian Trail)southbound, crossing the Skyline Drive. You will immediately intersect the Mill Prong Trail. Follow this trail to Camp Hoover. There are three stone stream crossing and the hike in is downhill and of course the return is UPHILL! There are other longer trails from the Camp to make a loop that are also listed on wikiloc if you prefer a longer hike.
Note: From 1929-1932 Camper Rapidan served as a weekend retreat for President Herbert Hoover and his wife and guests. Main buildings remaining are the 'Brown House' of President Hoover, the 'Prime Minister' for guests, and the 'Creel' a guest cabin. Pictures and displays accompany the site. The front porch of the Brown House has benches that serve as a great picnic spot.
