Itinerary description
I have seen about 3 camel spiders since I started hiking various desert terrains in 2010. I saw 6 in 30 mins on this rocky escarpment in the middle of the day. Maybe I had been unlucky before, or not looking, or out at the wrong time, but it was a treat to see so many at once! The biggest was 12-14 CM long, so quite a fierce looking beast. They dart under rocks for a while but if you persist in turning the rocks over, eventually they just stop moving for some reason, allowing you to get up close with the camera. Maybe they're posers.
The hike is easygoing (bearing in mind 35-40 degrees) in a sandy wadi or across gently undulating stony hillsides. The view south from the escarpment is pretty impressive - just be careful where you sit/put your hands!
In sum, a good reminder that it might not be advisable to pitch a tent on rocky outcrops and head for the sandy wadis instead.
