Itinerary description
OVERVIEW: This challenging hike follows a dirt road up a ravine, then branches up a trail in a side ravine to the top of the Camel Ridge, and finally follows the ridge top back to the trailhead. (This is almost identical to the Lower Camel ridge Loop except that it follows a narrow arroyo instead of a side ridge, up to the Camel ridge.)
TRAILHEAD: This hike takes the Allen Lloyd road north from the highway culvert beside the El Dorado apartment building on the Libramiento in San Antonio Tlay.
DESCRIPTION: Follow the road north. Shortly it bends right at the pump house. Continue up hill until coming to a clearing with a low, flat rock about five feet across (HUB.) At this point branch up the arroyo to the left. The trail jumps from side to side of the creek bed. Eventually come to the head of the ravine which feels like a cirque. Go straight ahead at first and then swing to the right and up to the top of the ridge. This last part is very steep and composed of loose soil and boulders. Once on top of the ridge follow the faint Camel Ridge trail south. There is a large area of camote holes but just stick to the ridge to eventually come to a good trail. Much later it is necessary to cross over a barbwire fence to the right (flagged.) By keeping to right side of the ridge, the trail comes out at the bottom of the huge road scar on the adjacent mountain. Continue down the dirt road back to the trailhead.
