Itinerary description
The Callitris Track is a quiet, sheltered walk through low hills and ironbark forest that serves as a perfect introduction to the natural beauty around Chiltern.
Today we started the walk from the carpark adjacent the Chiltern Visitor Centre. There’s plenty of shaded vehicle parking and well maintained public toilets.
The walk out of town on North Rd toward the cemetery is on the roadside so take care and be on alert for traffic.
Follow North Rd past the cemetery. This road becomes Box Tree Lane. After a few minutes you’ll arrive at the Chiltern-Mt Pilot NP entry. Take Bull Ant Track and continue for some time. Enjoy spring flowers, birds and forest scenery.
Continue on Bull Ant Tk crossing Donchi Hill Rd. Continue till you reach Donchi Hill Rd again (it loops). Turn right and in 5 minutes or so you’ll arrive at the Chiltern-Rutherglen Rd. Turn left and walk along the roadside for 100m. Turn right into Devonshire Rd. Keep walking to enjoy this rural lane abutting private farm land.
Today we opted for Mountain Lane, which eventually leads back onto Devonshire Rd. At Devonshire Rd turn left and just a short way along turn right onto Callitris Tk then left onto Wallace’s Gully Tk. There were plenty of spring flowers out but highlights were Indigo pea flowering shrubs and the fields of wild freesias...the scent was divine!
Walk for sometime, then arriving at Depot Rd turn left. Continue till you reach Bartley Tk. Turn right and enjoy a change of terrain, uphill.
Continue on the undulating Bartley Tk, passing Whistler Tk on your right. Continue to the next track on right which is Tank Tk. The signage was missing, this has been reported to Parks VIC.
A little further down the Tank Tk there’s some signage confirming it’s Tank Tk. Stay on Tank Tk and make your way back into the township for refreshments etc.
This is a picturesque winter or spring walk when trees and shrubs are flowering. The spring flowers and native orchids today did not disappoint.
Bring everything you need for the day, including something to sit on (pad or sarong). No picnic facilities/seats anywhere.
