Itinerary description
This nice loop starts at the Willis Palms.
The palms are only a short hike from the road (5 minutes).
Follow the regular park trail along the palms, up to the summit and head down towards the Visitor Center.
Past the Willis Palms take the first mayor wash to the right, that is marked as a preserve trail.
Keep in the left wash, watch out for the trail leading out of the wash to the right.
Follow it up to the summit.
Over the summit it heads toward the palm groves below (Mc Callum / Paul Wilhelm)
Instead of going to the Visitor Center at point "X Leave", leave the trail on the right.
Head down the rocky wash and turn right uphill in another wash. Turn left uphill and downhill again.
Go right uphill along some sheep trails and you will end up in the return canyon wash.
The return route is rather rocky, it makes the hiking a bit harder.
Gradually the wash widens and ends up in the official trail towards the car.
Up to the summit the trail is easy, except on a hot day, because of the climb.
The route cross country is rocky but still fairly easy.
Have some sturdy hiking boots and a stick along.
Along the Thousand Palms road, the Willis Palms are hard to miss on the left.
Park on the small trailhead parking.
