Itinerary description
More Anza Borrego Hiking
A loop in the badlands washes.
At the 3 palms, start hiking north.
Stay in the main sandy wash.
As the terrain opens up and the wash is almost gone, hike towards the hill ridge on the right.
On top you get a good 360 Degree view of the badlands.
You may be able to make it down into the Arroyo Hueso wash below. We found it too steep for an easy way in.
Hike down again and keep hiking north, until you get to a dirt road ("Road 1").
Almost at once keep right in a smaller wash, away from the road and hike over the hills.
At this point it's easy to get into the Arroyo Hueso.
For a short loop, turn right (south) and hike downstream.
To continue the loop, turn left (north).
After about 2 miles, the wash is less steep and it's really easy to hike to the other (west) fork of the Arroyo Hueso.
Hike south until the wash ends (Vallecito Creek).
Turn west and head back toward the car.
I marked some way points as "road", there are some tire tracks, but we encountered no cars on a Sunday in March 2012.

How to get here:
Take the the signed exit Palm Spring (Vallecito Creek). (on the S2 close to mile 43)
The next signed road on the left leads to the small Palm Spring Oasis.
A higher clearance AWD may be required. But most of the time it should be OK without and AWD.
