Itinerary description

There are a couple of ways to do this route. Perhaps the simplest is to catch a bus to Calderones (up past Presa de la Olla) and get off at the top of the long hill (turn off for Mineral del Cedro and El Cubo). This trails starts a little down the road towards Mineral del Cedro but I suspect you can start at a rough road heading up behind the bus stop towards the east.

Essentially, you are following an old water line up a ridge. You can follow the waterline or make your way up various animal paths towards a summit that has commanding views in all directions. Coming down along a washed out road you cross the waterline again back to the road to El Cubo. From here, there is a sharp left descent down the valley down another old road. As this road starts to swing right back towards the right and the creek beyond, you can drop down a partially overgrown road/track, then a cattle trail down to the creek.

From here, you essentially follow the creek bed or cattle trails along the creek to Presa de la Mata. From here, there is a gravel road back to Pastitas in Guanajuato. You can choose to follow along the topography close to the lake (narrow at times) and avoid the long switchback on the road, then cross the dam and follow a good track down the east side of the creek to the ruins of an old Hacienda (worth exploring) where you are forced back to the gravel road for the rest of the way.

Note the time indicated for this trip is not correct. From Calderones to Presa de la Mata, including the summit, is close to five hours. It is at least another hour or more along the gravel road back to Guanajuato

Summit view I have been up this summit several times. Not only does it have panoramic views but there is also a wonderful hike down an open ridge to the southwest ending up in Guanajuato.

This huge rock outcropping/boulder is a good break point with great views, including Guanajuato below and Cristo Rei (Cubilete) in the distance.

You can follow the rocks (except possible in summer with high water) or a cattle trail that crisscrosses the creek.
