Itinerary description

A fine walk over the Shropshire hills east of Church Stretton. Starting up over Hope Bowdler Hill via Gaer Stones, the good path drops down into the surprisingly remote feeling Cwms valley. From here we head off along a dirt track then down country lanes to the sleepy hamlet of Comley.

The Lawley can now be tackled direct via its steep southern end, followed by a traverse along its top to its nothern tip and a return to Comley via the good path across its base on the western side. Alternatively, for a less strenuous but longer ascent, reverse this section: walk along the base on the western side, climb to the top via the long northern ridge then drop back down into Comley via the steep southern ridge.

From Comley its up hill once again as we climb steeply over Little Caradoc and up to the top of Caer Caradoc, with its ancient hill fort on the summit. This is a fine viewpoint over to Church Stretton and the rising bulk of Long Mynd beyond.

From Caer Caradoc it's very much a case of pick your own route back down to Cwms as there are many paths - either head down directly from the summit, or first descend the south ridge, passing Three Fingers Rock before heading down. Either way deposits you back on the dirt road heading down Cwms. Follow this down to the stream crossing a then head up through woodland around the side of Helmeth Hill to pick up a farm track back to the start

Note: total ascent on this route is closer to 3000ft. GPS batteries died prior to the climb up Caer Caradoc (the walk's highest point at 1506ft), hence the flat topped sections on the elevation profile!
