Itinerary description

A great trail, illustrating typical coastal island forest. It starts out with mixed cedar and maple (some of them huge) forest and then changes to fir and arbutus along the coast. The trails are well maintained by the City of Nanaimo. Coastal wildlife (eagles, seals & sea lions) frequent this area. If you are watchful along the trail you will see "owls".

Great views towards Nanaimo and over to Gabriola Island. There is interesting boat traffic here due to the close proximity of the mills at Duke Point just north of the park.

Dodd Narrows, is a narrow pass between Vancouver Island and Mudge Island and is a popular shortcut for boaters. At change of tide the current here is very strong and it is interesting to watch boats struggle against it.

Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an AVA rating of 2 B.
