Itinerary description
A lovely walk over the Wainui Sadle, down to the Wainui River Valley and onto the Wainui Hut.
The Department of Conservation have an aviary at the Wainui Hut to acclimatize birds (Kaka and Kakariki - both native NZ parrots) before being reintroduced into this area. On the walk in, and out keep an eye and ear out for these pretty birds. There is a hi-tech outdoor bird feeding table at the hut and you may be treated to some wonderfully entertaining bird antics - Kaka are the clowns of the NZ parrot world!
Watch out for mountain bikers using the first section of the track.
A great day walk, or the start of a two day tramp through the least visited and remotest part of the Abel Tasman National Park - the more popular Coastal Track is like a 6 lane highway in gridlock compared to this section of the park!
Just a note about the Caanan Road - it is NOT a 4 wheel drive track and can be traversed easily with 2 wheel drive vehicles. It is however a narrow gravel road which runs from State Highway 60 Takaka Hill Road approximately 25 km to the car park where this walk starts, care should be taken when using this road as it is busy in the summer and you are likely to meet on coming traffic on the narrow sections. A great deal more care should be taken if using the road in winter for obvious reasons!
