Itinerary description
We caught a bus with Tracknet (near the Fiordland Visitor Centre) up to Rainbow Reach, then walked back.
It's pleasant easy walking on a soft track through different types of forest, with views down to the fast-flowing Waiau below. It's part of the long-distance Kepler Trail, so you will meet other hikers along the route.
Lots of bird song along the way; in addition to the ubiquitous blackbirds, thrushes and chaffinches we encountered fantails, tui, robin, grey warblers and kingfisher.
The track from the control gates back to Te Anau is unfortunately over hard gravel, but does lead through the Bird Sanctuary which you can wander through freely and enjoy seeing the rescue birds of rare NZ species.
