Itinerary description
The E4 Long Distance European Trail is not defined between the Serbian border at Gradina and Sofia in Bulgaria, however the Sultans Trail links the two places and can be followed instead. This is the path I followed, very similar to one published on www.sultanstrail.com, although it goes around a locked gate near the border. You may attract the attention of the border police close to the Serbian - Bulgarian border, see my experiences on johnpone4bulgaria.blogspot.com. Unfortunately you will also attract the attention of a lot of barking dogs, I have waymarked two places where I met a pack of loose animals. The route is mainly on roads and farm tracks, occasionally following field boundaries. It passes through woodland near the border and farmland later on and visits several villages and small towns before reaching the Bulgarian capital of Sofia.
The previous section of E4 trail I walked in Serbia can be found at https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/serbia-e4-long-distance-european-trail-from-jalovik-izvor-to-dmitrovgrad-25520300. After Sofia there are a number of good gpx trails for the Bulgarian section of the E4.
For my complete trek on the E4 across Europe read my book "Six Pairs of Boots: Spain to Cyprus on the E4 Trail" by John Pucknell available from Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com, the Bookdepository.com, lehmanns.de, bookspot.nl, and other good online bookstores.

The Sultans trail route goes through these gates but you cannot. My GPS trail takes you around them.

May be easier to take this road
I took a road that took me past a police post where they asked for my passport. It may be easier to take this road to avoid attention.
