Itinerary description
I am staying in Shiroka Laka Hotel for 2 nights before moving on to a new destination and a new hike.
For the first 7 km I was on asphalt road but all this distance I encountered less than 5 cars. The road is not frequently used.
What I really like in Bulgaria is those fresh water fountains that you find everywhere. You really don't need to carry lot of water for your whole hike. One bottle is always enough and you fill it up on the way.
At around 7.2 km from starting point, you have to take your left and leave the asphalt road. You will follow the yellow and green signs on dirt roads.
All the way up, you will have beautiful views over the valleys and mountains around you and you will be walking mainly among Pine trees, Picea Conica and Abies Normandiana.
At 11.3 km from starting point you have the option to close earlier the loop and take the trail on the right or you continue to your left and start your descent.
At 12.4 km, you will see for the last time those yellow and green signs. Leave the dirt road, take your right and walk among the Picea Conica trees for around 50 m and then you will join another dirt road. From there, you will follow the black and white signs.
At 13.3 km the scenery will change a bit and the leaves colors will be turning more to yellow. Most of the trees are Liquidambar, Betula Alba and many others.
From there you will be walking along a small stream.
At 17.3 km you will have to cross the stream and walk in its bed for around 300 m. I knew previously that in spring and early summer the stream is more of a small river and water would not be easy to cross. Try to ask the local guides before doing the hike.
It rained a bit for 30 min so the rocks in the river's bed were slippery.
After that the dirt road continues downhill in a breathtaking area till you reach the Shirokoleshka River.
From there you will be walking again on asphalt road till you reach back the Shiroka Laka village and close the loop.
I would say it is a moderate to difficult hike, easy to follow especially if you read well my instructions.
Enjoy and keep it clean !!!
Waypoints
Fresh water source
This is what I like in Bulgaria. While hiking, you will always encounter fresh water fountains
My part time companion
He came out of nowhere, walked with me couple of km, we shared my lunch and he left
Two trails
If you go right next to the electrical pole you will close the loop earlier and get back to the starting point. I took the left and will do the big loop
Take your left
Stay on the left side of the stream. Don't cross the small concrete bridge
Small stream
I read about it in one of the descriptions that during spring and early summer this stream would be very powerful and I don't know how much is it easy to cross it. Please bring up this matter with local hiking guides before doing the trail
Since I left the yellow and green signs I have been following those black and white ones
