Itinerary description
I left Plovdiv at 9 and at exactly 11 I started the hike from Smolyan Town.
Most of the trail is on dirt road along the Cherna River (the Black River) in the East Rhodope Mountains.
Amazing nature, calm area and the weather was perfect, 19° and a bit cloudy.
Whenever you have the chance, take a small trail on your left and rejoin the river. You will find small waterfalls, ponds and some hidden spots.
Be prepared to take lot of pictures.
I am sure in spring and early summer the river will be stronger and the waterfalls more spectacular but starting October you will be enjoying the autumn colors.
The trail is very well maintained, easy to follow and you pass by lot of wooden bridges.
With each waterfall you encounter you think that this is the one, till you arrive at the last one.
Simply breathtaking ...
I am in love with the area and with this hike.
I wouldn't imagine someone visiting Bulgaria and not doing this hike.
I would say easy to moderate hike.
Stay on the trail and enjoy it.
