Itinerary description
It is one of my favorite routes so far. The hike is long, challenging, and scenic. You will start climbing the peaks of Bukhansan (Bukhan mt.) one by one starting from 300m-ish peaks and finishing with the highest peak - Baegundae 836.5 m.
From the peaks, you will have an amazing view of Seoul and Bukhansan national park.
You will climb the following peaks:
- Jokduribong, 370 m
- Hyangnobong, 535 m
- Bibong
- Seunggabong, 567 m
- Munsubong, 727 m
- Hwaryongbong
- Seongdeokbong
- Baegundae, 836.5 m
And will pass close to some other peaks.
Difficulty.
I mark this trail as moderate. There is no problem to find a way since there are many signs and the trail is well organized. There is no bouldering, boulder hopping, scrambling, climbing, rope business, walking on edges with high exposure, etc. But the trail is 15+ km long with 1500 m elevation gain which requires good stamina. Apart from that, it includes climbing the Bibong peak which does not have any handrails or ropes for assistance and can be tricky for many people.
Public transportation.
The trail starts not far from Bulgwang metro station (Lines 3 and 6). Walk along Bulgwang-ro street till you reach Bulgwan-ro 6-gil. Walk along this street and you will see a staircase on the left. Trailhead coordinates are 37.613906, 126.933895.
The trail will end not far from Bukhansan Ui metro station.
Time to finish.
I spent 8h doing this route. Out of this time I spent about 30 mins eating my snacks on different peaks. I also took many pictures. So, if you do not waste time on this, you can finish it probably in 7h, if you have a good fitness level. But take into account that you have to find the trailhead (about 10-15 mins) and walk to the metro station about 2 km when you finish. So I recommend to start it no later than 8 AM to finish before sunset.
Gear.
It significantly depends on the season. For the end of October, I would say you need:
1) High-cut hiking shoes
2) 1.5 liters of water, electrolytes
3) fleece jacket
4) windbreaker
5) gloves to hold installed security rails and ropes
6) headlamp in case you finish after sunset (you never know)
Wikiloc in Korea.
When I came to Korea I found that I could not really zoom in on the Wikiloc map after a certain level. I recommend you to download the GPS track on your Garmin, Suunto, or another GPS device and follow the trail rather than rely only on your phone. Those devices will allow you to see the track in detail. Also, offline maps on Wikiloc should work.
