Itinerary description
Not for the casual hiker; rocky terrain, numerous rock scrambles, uneven root filled paths and decent overall length make it a difficult hike. Our conditions didn't help (rainy, slippery, muddy with lots of standing ground water) and we found it hard to make good time. Give yourself a full day, even with an early start it was around 3:00 when we finished in Tobermory where good friends were there to share a beverage and provide a lift back to the national park.
We really enjoyed the hike, loads of great lookouts, quite a variety to the surroundings and way less traffic than the trails around the Cyprus campsite. Also it was neat to see the monument at the end of our hike (and the very end point of the Bruce Trail).
Really enjoyed it and would highly recommend to the serious hiker. Poles are also recommended.
Waypoints
To Marr Lake
Take the left fork. The first section of the hike follows the Cyprus Lake trail over to the main path towards the Grotto. To avoid crowds and keep the distance manageable we turned onto the Marr Lake path (about 1 km from the campground) that leads you to Boulder Beach and the intersection with the Bruce Trail (about 2 km from the campground).
Boulder beach
This is where you join up with The Bruce Trail. It runs along the shoreline at this point, and Marr Lake is behind you. Look for white blazes on rocks, trees and cairns from here to the finish!
Overhang rock
Several nice places to get a great view of the lake. At this spot there was a hole that for the adventurous, could be climbed down to get you to waters edge.
Little Cove
This small provincial park is basically a beach with a washroom. We got some protection here from the rain while we had our lunch. Take the road back to the parking lot then look/turn right to follow the trail back into the woods.
Little Dunks Bay
A small deck overlooks the Bay. This viewpoint is a couple hundred meters off the main trail and can be ignored to save you some time/effort.
Trail end
The trail ends in Tobermory right beside the water. Lots of places to get food and drink.
