On this route we opted to hire the Bromo package in Probolinggo from the same hotel. Part of the kilometers of the route are by car, the displacement from the viewpoint to the Volcano parking lot. There is no problem in contracting the activity because there are many companies that are dedicated to that. It includes an off-road taxi that picks you up and returns you to the hotel, a specific off-road vehicle for the approach to the volcano and a small breakfast, but you can hire a package with more or less services. You can also go on your own, but you need time to prepare everything, and although this option is more expensive, it compensated us for the comfort of “having everything prepared for you”. Even so, you have to keep in mind that they try to get all the money they can from you and that they see the tourist as a source that distributes euros.
The taxi comes to pick you up at 3 in the morning so that it has time to take you to a viewpoint near the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. It takes an hour to get there and when you get out of the vehicle, in total darkness (I recommend bringing a flashlight and warm clothes) you have to walk a quarter of an hour to reach a viewpoint. Little by little, other tourists arrive and we patiently wait for the sun to rise. In this place there are hot drink stalls (tea, coffee...). When we have photographed the Bromo (every 5 minutes a photo) we decide to return to the taxi, which takes us to the outskirts of the Park so that an "official" SUV can take us to the Volcano parking lot.
You have to pay an extra tax to enter that we don't quite understand because we already had an "all inclusive". (I recommend making it clear when hiring Probolinggo what is included in the package, to avoid unpleasant situations that make you suspect that they are taking advantage of the situation).
Once in the Bromo car park, ABSOLUTELY OVERCROWDED, you climb the volcano on your own. The truth is that you have no problem. It takes very little even though it seems far away. Nor is it necessary to stay all morning, an hour gives you plenty of time to get used to the idea of the environment. On the way up there is a lot of dust, partly produced by the small horses that carry tourists and run down to make more trips. Since there are so many people you can't get lost.
Before the last climb up to the crater there is a ladder. It is so crowded that you even have to ask for a turn. It can be climbed with a little care on one side, parallel to the stairs.
Upon reaching the crater it is difficult to move because of the number of people there. A railing protects people's safety, but if you want to be a bit calmer, you should leave the railing and walk through the crater. If you opt for this suggestion, you will have to take extreme precautions because the fall towards both sides of the crater is very bad.
To go down I recommend using the ladder because the surface is slippery and it goes faster than going up.
When we reach the landing of the stairs we leave the way up and get to know the gullies and ravines of the volcano. If you decide to follow this recommendation, just follow the track. You have to be a little careful because at some point there is loose soil on some descent, but the risk is minimal.
When we finish going down the boulevards we arrive again at the “Mar de Cenizas” and a little later at the car park.
Keep in mind that Bromo is the national emblem of Indonesia and that it is very visited by all kinds of people, most of them are tourists.
