Itinerary description

Following the Bright Angel Trail - originally starting at the Bright Angel Trailhead at the top of the canyon; however, recording was started after the first rest stop - 1.5mi or 2.5km down the route. The finishing point was the Bright Angel Campground after a night over at Indian Garden Campground.

The return route can be assumed to be exactly the same with the additional hike from the first rest stop to the top of the rim - an extra 1.5mi or 2.5km.

The hike was commenced at 2300hrs on Day 1, camping from 0100 to 0900hrs on Day 2, hiking to the Bright Angel Campground from 0900hrs to 1130hrs on Day 2 and hiking all the way up (15km/8.5mi) starting 1900hrs and finishing at 2400hrs on Day 2. Total return journey distance is 30km/18mi.

Notes:

1. Avoid peak daytime hiking (1200-1600hrs); temperatures can reach 130F (55C) during peak summer times
2. Bring plenty of water (as a redundancy measure - we had 4L (1gal)/person but only used 0.5L each way)
3. Be careful swimming in the river - you can traverse the river, however be very cautious where you pick your starting point and where you aim for. Be wary of the current and estimate your landing point. Make sure to avoid strong rapids and currents - the river is not always fastest in the middle! We swam across just past the black suspension bridge, near the Beach at the Bright Angel Campground. There's opportunity to swim in the river when you hit the Colorado river from the trail; however, that is not a convenient place to cross it!
