Itinerary description
This is a linear tour from Brighouse to Northowram, both places being reached by buses from Bradford.
I started the tour from just outside Sainsbury’s in Brighouse by walking along the canal towpath before climbing up a relatively steep bank into Freeman’s Wood.
Exiting the wood, I turned right down Brookfoot Lane and after a short while turned left on a footpath known as South Holme Lane. At the edge of a field, I crossed a stile and found the way to follow was straight down the field to cross Red Beck on a slabbed bridge.
The path up from the beck was clear and went through a small horse stablings and then sloped back down toward the beck.
I had no difficulty following this footpath until I came to Halifax Old Road when the way to cross the railway line was not clear to me. One way I discovered was to go up Break Neck and under a high railway bridge to reach Halifax Road where I turned right and then entered Wood Head.
I was convinced I was following the right path, but found the correct one was off to my left, so I had to scramble down a steep slope to reach the proper route of Wood Lane.
The route was then across fields into Only House Wood, round the back of a cricket pitch, across more fields until reaching Westcroft Avenue cul-de-sac, where I turned left and then right at the roundabout to catch a bus back to Bradford.
The route was muddy in places, but not excessively so. However, there was one stile with standing water on both sides that was a bit tricky to negotiate. There were five stiles along the way. I didn’t find the route had that much to recommend it.
