Itinerary description
Physical difficulty: 2/5
Note #1: The starting point is the village of Brgudac. It's also the focal point of many trails in the area. You can easily make this hike as short and as long as you want, by incorporating other peaks in your route.
Note #2: The ascent to Brajkov vrh (eng. Brajko's peak) is very short, (5-10 mins) but very steep. You must use your hands to pull yourself up. It may not be suitable for some children or older persons, but it can easily be skipped and the trail will essentially remains the same.
--
This is a relatively easy hike, mostly through karst (rocky) woods that are typical for the mountains in this region. From the parking lot just outside Brgudac, you follow a very well marked path. There are many marked intersections, and many other route combinations are possible.
The way we went features the steepest ascent at the beginning, from Brgudac to Korita (eng. Troughs. Towering just over Korita is the first peak, Brajkov vrh. From Brajkov vrh, Županj vrh (eng. Županj peak) is about 30-40 minutes away. From Županj vrh, a circular return path will take you back to Korita and then back to Brgudac (you can take the same path like the one you went up, or choose a different path).
It's a lovely, undemanding nature hike suitable for hikers of all ages, and also pets. In the summer time, make sure to bring water. Water can also be replenished at Korita, which are the of a source of a small clear freshwater spring (the water is safe to drink).
Waypoints
Brgudac (Parking lot)
Free parking lot just outside Brgudac. It's possible to park your vehicle even inside the village, but don't be an asshole and don't disturb the locals.
Intersection #1
The official start of the trail, just follow the markings towards "Pl. K. Korita".
Intersection #2
Both paths will lead you to Korita; the left path is the steepest ascent on this trail, and also more pretty to hike. On your way back, you will return from the right-hand path back to this intersection.
Korita (eng. Troughs)
Korita are a series of literal wooden troughs that are filled with a clear, freshwater spring that's safe to drink. The excess water gathers in a natural pool at the lower end of the valley. Depending on the season, there may be more or less water in the troughs and the pool.
Brajkov vrh (1091 m) (eng Brajko's peak)
Brajkov vrh, the more beautiful of the 2 peaks covered by this trail. The ascent to the peak is very short (a few minutes), but pretty steep. It can easily be skipped, and you would just continue directly from Korita to Županj vrh. Still, the scenery is quite beautiful from the top, so we recommend that you visit it.
Intersection #4
Continue towards "Pl. K. Korita", this will take you from the top of Brajkov vrh back into the valley below.
Intersection #6
Turn here to start the ascent towards Županj vrh (Županj peak) on the northern side; if you continue straight on this intersection after a few minutes you will reach the Korita mountain lodge (Planinarska kuća Korita). But, you can skip it for now and visit it on your return, as you will be passing by it anyways.
Intersection #7
Take the path towards "Županj vrh (sjeverni put)" (eng. northern path). You will come back to this intersection on your descent from Županj, only on the southern path (južni put).
Županj vrh (1138 m) (eng. Županj peak)
This peak is an official summit of the Croatian Mountain Trail. From it you can easily see Brajkov vrh, Vojak (Učka's tallest summit), Veliki Planik, and others. It's a grassy peak, so you can easily have a picnic here, though it can be windy and there isn't much shade. If you wish to stop and rest here, we recommend to descend a bit further down the southern slope where there wind is always less strong.
Intersection #9
You can make your trail longer here by following the road that lead to the south (can easily be seen on the map). It will eventually connect with the path we took (at Intersection #12).
Intersection #11
Either take this path towards Brgudac; or if you'd like you can continue further to the actual Korita and then take the same way back as you did when you went up.
