Itinerary description
One of the most beautiful hikes in New Zealand in my opinion. It is a heavy hike as day hike, but very doable in terms of well maintained tracks and steepness (until the Brewster Hut).
Good mountain boots are recommended, especially after the Brewster Hut since from there on out it is no longer an official DOC track.
Right at the start there is a river crossing, you have to walk through that. Try and find the least deep spot, the water is extremely cold.
The Garmin GPS used for this track should be very accurate. I made one mistake during the hike up, right after the Brewster Hut I went to the left (as seen on GPS track), but you should go straight. The way back I did do that correctly so you can follow that line.
After the Brewster Hut, as mentioned, it is not an official track anymore. Therefore the walking track can probably change throughout the year, since there are many loose rocks. Try and follow as many rock pillars as you can.
I did the track in about 7.5 hours, including breaks. My recommendations:
* Start early (we started around 07:30);
* Bring enough layers of clothes since it can get cold and windy up the glacier;
* Prepare yourself for a 6 to 9 hour hike.
