During my visit to Wellington, the city lives up to its reputation of "Windy Wellington" and adds a generous dose of rain on top. However, once the showers have subsided, I decide to explore one of the highlights of the New Zealand capital: the botanical garden. And take the term "highlight" literally because the botanical garden is situated on top of a hill, although you can also reach it by cable car.

The starting point of the walk is a little coffee house located near the rose garden. The small but bustling café is perfect for grabbing something to eat or drink before or after this walk. Before my departure, I indulged in toast with eggs - why not - and a cappuccino. The ideal moment to start walking and burn off the surplus calories. The journey kicks off with a steady ascent through the greenery of the botanical garden. This climb leads to the herb garden, where a beautiful panoramic view of Wellington awaits. There are more viewpoints in the botanical garden, each offering a different perspective.

After visiting the herb garden, I follow the narrow paths and ignore the broad, paved roads present in the 25-hectare domain. Now, the real climbing begins, although the ascent of sixty meters is still very modest. At the top, the cable car station awaits, along with a tiny museum about the cable car and even a planetarium. If you arrive by cable car, this is the first point of the botanical garden, but at this point, I am already halfway through the walk.

Through a few more narrow paths, I come across a rocky garden, and the large trees here catch my attention. I continue taking these small paths, but I realize that I miss a small pond with ducks. Oh well, unfortunate but not a big deal. After a gradual descent, I start climbing again, and when I see a giant pine tree, I realize that I've been here before. It was either taking this path again or passing by the street to go to the rose garden. I prefer the first option and find it more enjoyable to go back to the rose garden through the herb garden. A few steps lead me to this garden, but in this summer period, most of the roses have already bloomed.

In the greenhouse, I get a second chance because some beautiful flowers are in bloom here. The pond with water lilies is also worth a visit. It not only hosts lilies but also other water plants from all corners of the world. Although this greenhouse is not very large, I easily lose several minutes staring at all this natural beauty. Moreover, I can do this in peace because there is no one else here. A bit further, there is also a small but beautiful waterfall where I take a brief pause. This is a lovely conclusion to the visit to this botanical garden.

This botanical garden may lack some natural beauty to overwhelm me during the New Zealand summer, but it is a beautiful setting to stroll around and relax. Expect a little effort to reach the top by the cable car, but you will be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view, and you can enhance your cultural knowledge in the tiny museum about the cable car or the local planetarium. Along with the Waterfront and Te Papa Tongarewa, the botanical garden is worth a visit if you have only one day to explore this city.

After visiting the herb garden, I let myself be guided by the small paths and ignore the wide, paved roads that are also present in the 25-hectare domain. The real climbing is now underway, although the rise of sixty meters is still very modest. At the top there is the cable car station, there is also a tiny museum about the cable car and there is even a real planetarium. If you come by cable car, this is the first point of the botanical garden, but at this point I am already half way through the walk.

Via some small paths I again come across a rocky garden and it is the large trees that stand out here. I keep taking those small paths, but I notice that I miss a small pond with ducks. Oh, too bad, but unfortunately. After a steady descent, I start to climb again slowly and when I see a huge pine tree, I realize that I have already been here. It was either take this path again or pass it along the street side to go to the rose garden. Then I prefer the first option and I find it more fun to go back to the rose garden via the herb garden. I reach this garden via some stairs, but during this summer period the roses have almost all finished blooming.

I will get another chance in the conservatory because there are some beautiful flowers in bloom here. The pond with water lilies is also more than worth a visit. Not only lilies grow here, but also other aquatic plants from all corners of the world. Although this conservatory is not very large, I can easily lose a few minutes gazing at all this natural beauty. Moreover, I can do that with complete peace of mind, because there is no one else here. A little further there is also a small but beautiful waterfall where I stopped for a moment. This is a nice ending to the visit to this botanical garden.

This botanical garden may lack some natural beauty to overwhelm me in the New Zealand summer period, but it is a beautiful setting to stroll around and relax. Expect a little effort to get to the top by cable car, but you will see a beautiful view and you can brush up on your cultural knowledge in the tiny museum about the cable car or the local planetarium.
