Bogton Braes circuit, Comrie
Hear pronunciation Press to hear pronunciation

This circular walk leads through the attractive pastoral countryside of lowland Perthshire. The section alongside the River Earn is attractive but is overgrown on the last part due to the river eroding the path when in flood. Much of the route is waymarked but some of the markers are missing, particularly on the riverside section.

TERRAIN
Mostly waymarked paths and fields. Sections of the path along the banks of the River Earn have been eroded by the river necessitating difficult detours through woodland. The route can be overgrown in summer so dry weather is best to avoid a soaking.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Comrie is served by both local and long-distance buses.

Walk Description
STAGE 1
From the main street in Comrie, turn south and cross Dalginross Bridge over the River Earn. On the far side there is parking on the lane immediately off to the right. The walk begins by following Strowan Road which is on the opposite side, i.e. turning left having crossed the bridge from the main street. When there are wooden piles on the left side of the road, look out for a path heading into the woods alongside the river. Follow this path, soon leading through a small gate.

STAGE 2
This section of the walk keeps close to the River Earn, running sometimes through the fringing oakwoods and sometimes alongside the field edge beside them. Cross a stile to pass between the river and the sewage works. At the track head straight across, running along the field edge again briefly before taking a now fainter path just inside the woods.

STAGE 3
This next section is often overgrown with grasses and sections of path have been washed out by floods, but it is still passable, eventually running close to the river once more. Where it crosses a couple of tiny feeder streams the path has been eroded by the might of the river in flood; crossing these requires care and a little more agility. Just beyond the second more awkward stream the difficult section is passed as a gate is crossed and the trees are left behind. Continue by the river, crossing a stile over a field fence.

STAGE 4
Once over the stile bear right, away from the river, to pass through a gate and reach a minor road. Turn right along the road for a short distance until a turning on the left signed for Glascorrie Road via Mill of Fortune. This is a pleasant lane fringed with cherry trees and views across the strath to the rocky foothills of the Highlands. At Drummondernoch Farm keep on the track which turns to the right, becoming grassier and passing through a gate. There are views now to Comrie.

STAGE 5
Keep straight ahead with a wall on your right for some time. Eventually the path heads through a gate and cuts across some grassy fields, passing through more gates - the waymarking is fairly good. Eventually Cowden Loch (with a farmhouse beyond) comes into view over to the left. Keep straight on, just right of a line of conifers, eventually bearing left only once well past the loch. Go through the gate in the field corner to join the track which bears left uphill (you are following the footpath signs for Glascorrie Road). The track climbs - ignore the left branch down towads the loch - and then swings back right, joining a minor road. Turn right along the road to reach the B827.

STAGE 6
Turn right immediately before the road junction onto a track signed as a footpath to Comrie. This keeps just to the left of the fence, bearing right after a few hundred metres and giving great views to Comrie. Continuing to just left of the garden of a farm cottage. Keep straight on when a footpath goes off left, soon reaching a housing estate on the southern extremity of Comrie. Follow the road ahead, passing through Dalginross, a delightful suburb of Comrie with many old cottages with beautifully tended gardens. Keep ahead to return to Dalginross Bridge and the start.
