Itinerary description
This was planned to be a circular tour based on West Ayton, going out to a viewpoint at Green Gate, shown on the Ordnance Survey map and returning by way of the castle remains at West Ayton. I parked on the main road just before the bus stop opposite Ye Olde Forge Valley Inn, but there is more on-street parking on Garth End Road, near the pub.
There was quite a bit of road walking along Castlegate and then Seavegate before finding the marked footpath off to the right into Raincliffe Woods.
I eventually got to Green Gate, where there is a car park, but, unfortunately, no view! I think the trees must have grown up since. Rather than go back into the wood, I stayed on the road until I was able to get to the boardwalk next to river in the bottom of Forge Valley.
Signposts indicate that you may be able to see crayfish, otters, kingfishers, etc. I saw nothing like that apart from a woman in a bathing costume sitting in the river, which I found a bizarre sight. I suppose in addition to scaring me, she could have done the same to otters, kingfishers, and the like.
The boardwalk ended and I crossed a field that led me to the remains of the castle at West Ayton. This was actually a fortified manor house.
It was easy to make my way back to the car from there.
I think it is better to do the tour in reverse order and walk as far along the boardwalk as you want before returning, thus making it a simple out-and-back tour; going in Raincliffe Woods did not offer me a lot.
