Itinerary description
The Shouf Biosphere Reserve covers about 5% of the overall area of Lebanon and extends along the ridge of the western chain of Mount Lebanon from Dahr-el Baidar in the north to Jezzine in the south and overlooks both the Bekaa valley to the east and the Shouf valley to the west. The mostly treeless summit of the Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve forms the skyline of a large part of southern Lebanon. Other than being a well-protected reserve, this biosphere allows dogs to enjoy its mountains (unlike Jabal Moussa and Ehden reserves). This winter was so generous and the mountains are fully dressed in white. A snowshoeing loop in Bmahrai/Ain Zhalta (Shouf cedars reserve). The trail was fully in snow starting from the reserve entrance. If you are doing this loop in other seasons, you may have to change your path at some parts especially where i mentioned "shortcuts". A path may be easier or more difficult when snow-covered. A general rule is to always use your common sense and never navigate a trail "blindly". Soon after the entrance, we left the main trail and took the beautiful forest trail. This part is amazing and i strongly recommend it instead of staying on the main trail that doesn't enter the forest. The climb is long but moderate. At the top, you will magnificient views of all the mountains from North to South: Sannine, Zaarour, Kneisseh, Barouk and the mighty Mount Hermon. The Bekaa valley is fully visible as well. You can also see part of Ammiq wetlands and Qaraoun lake. The way back was on the main trail.
