Itinerary description
Blaen Y Glyn Memorial Walk, Brecon Beacons, Wales.
This is a nice beginners walk really but an old favourite of mine because it takes in a memorial to a crashed WW2 Wellington bomber (Canadian air crew in 1942) and I like to pay my respects. I walked with my friend Alan who wants to get back out on the hills regularly.
Start at the upper Blaen Y Glyn car park which is a large one but still fills up on the weekend. Once parked you simply go North up the short sharp hill up to Craig Y Fan Ddu and then follow Graig Fan Las around until you just go past spot height 754 on your left. Here is a well worn trail that branches off right that traverses the hillside across to the stone memorial and the remnants of the downed aircraft.
Today was not a sky blue day but normally the views here of Blaen Y Glyn valley are beautiful. We paid our respects and then headed West steeply downhill on indistinct paths until we hit the Blaen Y Glyn river. We crossed the river and headed across some swampy ground (pathless) until we hit Blaen Y Caerfannell river and then crossed that too. After the latter there is a pretty well worn path all the way to Blaen Y Glyn forestry where you just follow the forest path back to the start point.
Parking: Plenty at the start or nearby but busy on the weekends.
Route Summary: Stone blocked mountain trails and indistinct paths. One stretch in the valley bottom which is a bit swampy. Would be much worse in winter. Great valley views. Includes a well known WW2 aircraft crash site.
Route Statistics: 7.5km with 350m of height gain done in 2hrs 40mins.
