Itinerary description
The Goon Goon Dina Cultural Walk (Lightening Lizard) is a walk which takes the hiker through a series of noticeboards describing the conditions and methods that local aborigines (Ghangalu) used to survive. The boards also show examples of early settler establishment and explain the reason for their failure.
As you get to the sandstone area to the north of the track you will experience signs of Aboriginal paintings on the sandstone rock face. Protection barriers are up to stop people getting too close to the paintings.
The area around Blackdown Tablelands was heavily logged around 1971 for its tall stringybarks and this facilitated the tracks and roads in the area. This hike follows Mimosa Creek and it's passage down from the sandstone escarpment from the higher ground to the north.
This track also includes the track from the campground to Mook Mook lookout also following Mimosa Creek. This walk is best done early morning as the lookout faces east and provides fantastic lighting across the gorge when the sun rises. Unfortunately at the time this was done and like many days there was heavy fog around in the area. Ground orchids abound along the trip and especially after fire.
There are toilets at the campground. There is a campground filetrail that leads between the two tracks. Ignore the blip in the track which shows a massive drop around the lookout. This is a sign that the cliff face has not been drawn in the correct area by the mapper.
