Itinerary description
Scenic, easy road access, 2 mile loop that includes ponds, hydraulic diggins and low country woodlands on single track and dirt roads. Spenceville crossed with Malakoff on a smaller scale. Just opened March 2015 and did not yet have a trail head sign on Mooney Flat road, so note the location and drive slowly or you'll miss it. The small parking area has no facilities. There are two gates on the trail near the trail head to keep cattle in. The one on the suggested starting end of the loop is across single track does not look like it will ever be locked. The gate on the end of the loop across a road is lockable but easy to climb through; though it was unlocked this day. No horses or motorcycles allowed, dog and bikes OK. BYLT is promising upgrades to the trail head and the addition of an official trail to Deer Creek and the South Yuba river. http://www.bylt.org/index.php/about/news/current-news/explore-black-swan-fall/ The land trust area near the ponds is surrounded by private property. See http://www.northernfoothills.org/index.php/search/yuba-narrows-and-black-swan-ranches/ for a map of the land trust boundaries.
