Itinerary description

This hike begins at the Black Balsam Rd. parking lot off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Brevard, North Carolina. It then climbs up the Ivestor Gap Trail and Art Loeb Trail to the summit of Cold Mountain before returning to the parking lot.

Total distance is typically around 16-18 miles depending on your route.

While hiking, I filmed for a minute or two during every mile. The resulting footage was used to make the attached video. It should give you a good idea of what to expect while hiking in the Cold Mountain area. Enjoy.

It is a great hike. I did it as a one-night backpacking trip. The portion known as The Narrows, about 7 miles from the start at Black Balsam (1.5 miles before my campsite on Cold Mountain) is quite difficult with a full pack (~40 pounds). There is a very good spring with a pipe just under a mile up the mountain from Deep Gap.
