Itinerary description

Why worthwhile? Very nice view from the summit (towards the surrounding 3000m peaks and the lake).

Starting point: Bielerhöhe, Silvretta Stausee (reservoir, lake) at 2036m. (large parkingspace). [Montafon - Partenen (from the east: Tirol - Galtür)].

Time: 3 hours

Details: Partly quite steep climb, weathered route marks. Pay attention to the route description. After bad weather periods you should check out the state of the paths (parts can be washed away by huge amounts of water).

Route description:

It is possible to park your car at more than one parking space nearby the lake, but remember that there will be many tourists during the summer periods and in the weekends!

We still find a nice place to park our car just in front of hotel Piz Buin. From here we go left and a sandy road leads us towards a ski-lift. Underneath the ropes of the ski-lift we go along a small path. In turns this steep path goes upwards (red / red-white marks). Now please pay attention: after about 20 to 25 minutes you must notice a round waterhole at your left (on the level with the path). Immediately after this, a steep path goes straight left upwards to the mountain cross we have already seen at the parking space. After nearly 30 minutes we will reach the mountain cross where we have a beautiful view.

After a short break we follow a path (on our right hand with your view towards the summit of Bieler Spitze) that goes upwards. From here you can climb to the summit in many different ways if you like but we'll stick to the 'normal' route.

In the beginning the path follows the slope for about 10 to 15 minutes until it ends at a junction -- with the route to the summit and our 'alternative' descent ('alternative' because we don't take the same route as we came up here). You can recognize this junction because it is in the middle of a field with quite big rocks. We will actually have to climb over these rocks!
First, of course, we will go to the summit of Bieler Spitze before we get back here for our descend, so follow the path upwards. After the large rocks there is a clear path again. At the little ridge (= 'joch' in German), where we have a view of the other side of the mountain, the path goes left and leads to the summit in about 10 minutes (white-yellow marks).

The descend: go back to the junction (field of rocks). Here we go more or less straight on (east) and not back to the mountain cross! After about 10 minutes, at another junction, go to the right (downwards). After a short zigzag descend the path crosses the steep slope (please pay attention: after bad weather periods, the path can be partly washed away). After a while you will notice the waterhole again. Here straight on towards the lake and the parking space.

Done in 2002.
