Itinerary description

WARNING: the section between the start and the waypoint "Nukutusvaara" may (soon) have become impossible. this trail was recorded in 2012. In 2020, the new road E10 opened just north of Kiruna. In 2023, LKAB announced finding a million tons of rare earth minerals in the same "Per Geijer" area. I don't know how the extraction of rare earth minerals underground will affect the area aboveground. A long circular day hike from Kiruna via Nukutusvaara and Kurravaara to the Rautas river and back along the trail via Mattarahka. No serious terrain difficulties. Mostly on easy trails, but there are some swamps, crossing Nukutusjoki can pose a small challenge, and part of the route along the river is a bit stony. The biggest difficulty is the sheer length, meaning you need a good physical condition for this hike. You will likely meet nobody at all.
