Itinerary description
On the R200 road here is a parking bay and picnic tables where the trail can be commenced. A gravel path zigzags up to a mast and beyond to the summit of Benbeg. My map shows it as if I went through the forest which isnt what I did and certainly not one to try.
Fairly steep initial climb on the gravel path to mast. This trail is not signposted and involves following sheep tracks much of the time. The day I climbed was a beautiful sunny late Summers afternoon though there was a stiff breeze as one got up so bring appropriate clothing. The trail is close to ridge with fairly sharp drop in parts so if a little concerned with heights I suggest waking sightly in from edge, However doing so after rainfall may mean ground is wet and boggy.
Once up Benbeg (a short distance beyond gravel/path/mast) the journey curves around the ridge of hill and is lovel/ It leads to summit of Culcagh. I took the Ulster Way trail which is signposted and it that brings one to where the Stairways to Heaven boardwalk trail (taken from other side of hill) ascends Cuilcagh,. The views are very beautiful and I happily spent time up there soaking it in. Descent is back as one came and the return/descent fairly easy on a beautiful early Summer's evening.
