Itinerary description

Start at the "Island Café", walk north to the large Ficus tree. Then head up the hill and walk along the trail that is next to a building up to the street. Cross the street, slightly slanted to the left, and continue uphill until you reach the intersection of trails. Take the one straight uphill and you reach the Kobba, a 17th-century marble pavilion created by then ruler Hammouda Pacha. Continue across the street, following a path uphill (which crosses one more street after about 150m) to reach the flag park on the top of the Belvedere hill, with fabulous views over Tunis in all directions. Stop here for a picnic if you’d like, and then cross the park and cross the street, walking left for about 50m before turning right into a sandy patch, which you cross and follow steps downhill. Take the first right and you’re on a gravel path that’s part of Belvedere Park’s fitness circuit. After about 250m, take a sharp left on a small path downhill, where you pass some monkey bars before taking the first right again. You’re now walking on a second gravel path, first created by the Nazis in World War 2. German soldiers used the park as a lookout post over Tunis and created tunnels, which, while walled off and abandoned today, can still be seen. After about 130m, take a sharp left and walk down to another path, which passes by the old tunnel entrances. Take this path further downhill to a children's’ playground, which you pass through, before crossing the street and crossing straight over the next meadow. Walk downhill and hold right, and you’ll soon be right at the field next to the large ficus tree that you started at. Head back to your starting point. Now is a great time to take a break in the “Island Café”. The zoo is right across the pond, so animal lovers should be sure to check it out, too.
