Itinerary description
Beinn na Caillich is a subsidiary top to Mam na Gualainn, a Corbett sitting alongside the northern shore of Loch Leven in Lochaber. Kinlochleven is the closest settlement and provides access to both hills however the western extent of the ridge can also be accessed from Callert House, closer to North Ballachulish.
I picked up the West Highland Way from Kinlochleven and followed this until I reached an obvious path which leaves the WHW, descending to a bridge which crosses the Allt Nathrach. This is an ideal spot to fill up with water before heading up the hill. The pointed peak and grey scree of Stob Bàn dominate the view behind, as you zig zag your way up Beinn na Caillich.
The summit is pretty low key and it wasn't hard to find a spot to pitch the tent. The views however were amazing in all directions, from the Ardgour hills in the west right across to Schiehallion in the east. Despite the time of year the weather was calm and mild which always makes for a fine camp. Stepping out the tent at 3am to spend a penny, I noticed a glow on the horizon...
