As a "flat-lander" from Louisiana, and still getting used to the elevation, I rated this trail moderate. Even though we did not have that much elevation change, breathing thin air made the hike strenuous in some places.
The air was crisp and clear, the sky was beautifully blue, and the temperature perfect, can't say that many times in LA. This was a wonderful short hike to a high altitude lake. The trail takes you along a section of the Continental Divide/Colorado Trail, and can be confusing following some of the trail markers. Take your time and look at your maps.
Getting to the trail head was somewhat adventurous as the unimproved road was full of water bars and small rocks. We did it in an AWD Rav4 with no issues as long as you took your time. The road was dry, but had it been wet, it would have been a different story.
We were staying in Leadville, and this are is full of day hikes.
