Itinerary description

A hike in Algonquin Park through the forest with multiple stream crossings, a nice lookout, as well as a marsh boardwalk and a view of Bat Lake. The trail is well marked with blue disks and while easy to follow there were several sections that were very muddy and not easy to travel through.

Some beautiful old growth trees were the highlight of the hike for me with stands of conifers, maples, hemlock and spruce. Not much wildlife was spotted. At the start of the trail there is a parking lot and an information board with a hiking booklet with in depth information about the ecology of the area. Marked signed posts correspond to the map and the commentary in the booklet which provides a great learning experience.

The Sands of Pine... sandy soil means that conifers dominate here.

There are multiple stream crossings (not all are noted as way points). All have bridges for easy crossing.

Also sign post #8. Black Spruce and Tamarack are the only trees that do well in the peat bog.

Sign posts #10 and #11. High in acid the lake cannot support fish but it is home to the yellow spotted salamander.
