Itinerary description
If you like train tunnels, you'll love the Barrimoon section of the Boyne Burnett Rail Trail. The trail starts near Kalpowar, an hours drive NW of Gin Gin. The entire section from Barrimoon to Builyan is 26km but we only had time to check out the first 4km from Barrimoon and we weren't disappointed. Within a kilometre we entered the first of 6 old rail tunnels in that section. The walk was easy, as with most rail trails, the gradient was fairly flat and the trail was well defined. Most tunnels were around 100m long and to add to the enjoyment were some wonderful views across the local countryside, as you are on the Dawes Range and up about 430m. Please be careful not to scare the micro bat colonies which reside in several of the tunnels. You can camp in the nearby Kalpowar National Park or stay at the Pines Camping area in Kalpowar which is a donation only stay.
