Itinerary description

You could hike this trail in 1 day, but I think it's better to plan this hike as an overnight backpacking trip. You should spend the night at Baker Lake so that you can appreciate the wonderful sunrise at Baker Lake. The reflection of the morning light off the amphitheater of rocks above Baker Lake is awesome!! While watching this, I almost felt like I was watching a beautiful IMAX nature movie, but in real life! The entire hike is very pleasant, but this was the highlight.

The part of the trail between Baker Lake and the ridge above Johnson lake is not on an official trail, but there are cairns to help you find your way, and it's pretty easy to figure out where you need to go.

This is a wonderful hike, and I highly recommend it. The hike to Wheeler Peak is my favorite at the Great Basin National Park, but this is a close second.

-Finally, I noticed on google earth after I had hiked this trail, that there is a cairn at the ridge above Johnson Lake indicating the start of the trail down to Johnson Lake. It's worth it to find this cairn, because it would be a little safer than my gps track. My gps track did meet up with the trail, but my route is steeper than the trail you should hike.
