Itinerary description
Amazing round hike! We started it in a cloudy, foggy and rainy day but we finished with an esplendid sunny afternoon.
Hike starts at the free parking slots at Kötschachtal (Grüner Baum), then it follows a flat bike trail by the river up to the cross with a signal to the Reedsee. Now we start the hike up in a restless path under pines up to the Reedsee. This part of the hike is very demanding and being fit is a must. The technical difficulty is moderate, not appropriate for everybody, although there is not any danger.
It is a never ending path, but the view of the Reedsee is amazing and you will realize that the effort to get here was worthy.
Then the hike continues up along a similar path first, and after along a rocky path to get the peak Palfmertscharte. Immediately after this summit, we walked by the Palfnersee and then the hike goes downwards to reach the Graukogelbahn, where you can have a beer in a well deserved break.
As the hike until this point was hard because of the bad weather, we decided to take the chairlift up to the bottom station in Bad Gastein (20,50€/person). The signals indicate approximately 2 hours on foot by an easy path or by the bike trail.
From the bergbahn station at the bottom, you just need to find the "Kaiser Promenade", which will get you to the parking at Kötschachtal in approximately 50 minutes. Regular bus is another option.
Very recommendable hike, the views are incredible, especially with a sunny day. But difficulty is moderate/high and you need to be fit. Good boots, walking sticks, raincoat, sweater, water, food and a good head for highs are mandatory.
