Itinerary description
The "Caminito del Rey" trail provides quite breath-talking views of the mountains through three different canyons, along the river (Rio Guadalhorce), and is a major tourist attraction in the area.
Starting at the El Kiosko restaurant you first have to walk up the road to a tunnel entrance, and the 1.5 kms through the pine trees down to the Control point. There are bathrooms and a vending machine on hand.
At this cabin you wait your turn for entry, depending on your reserved group time ... (in our case we had to wait a Long time due to arriving very early).
You will be given a helmet to use during the walk. At difficult areas there are staff to control the numbers, and inside the canyon safe boardwalks are in place providing spectacular views.
Much of the walk takes you on paths through woods, and provides great views of the surrounding mountains.
At the finish of the walk, where you return your helmets, there are many small bars, bathrooms, a picnic area, and parking.
The walk is only in one direction and easy, but moderate if you suffer from vertigo. At one point there is a small Suspension bridge to cross.
You need to buy a ticket well in advance from their website, and best with a guided tour ... they probably will include a trip by bus back to the start point. You could park near the finish point, and take a bus to the start point first.
The walk (7.0 kms) only takes about two hours, but be prepared for long queues if you do not have a proper reservation time ... plan it well!
Highly recommended.
