Itinerary description
We started this hike down on the mainstreet after parking our car on the side of the road. Be prepared and take plenty of water!!! We had a cloudy and quite chilly day but still we’re glad we had enough water with us. So if the temperatures are higher, the sky is blue and the sun is shining it will be a harder walk and water is essential.
Some people drive up the road and park their car somewhere higher up. But we wanted to do this hike without any motorised help. Well to be honest, we had a car that brought us to the starting point hahaha!
After a sometimes steep climb we started with the Cave of the 99 Saints. Some call it the cave of the 99 holy fathers. The road turns gradually into a challenging path. And when near the cave you really have to mind your steps. Descending into the cave is really a special moment. It feels like you’re in some kind of movie. It helped we were the only visitors at that time.
You should bring a torch / headlamp / flashlight when you want to go down into the cave because it’s really dark down there.
After climbing out of the cave we took an old path to the Spaniakos Fortress. Heaps of sheep we passed. Funny little creatures and we love them.
The path is a bit hard to follow at some points but with gps you should be able to find the track easily. Every now and then you’ll see the blue mark on the rocks. Then you know you’re alright. Our legs really got scratched quite heavily by the lower bush. A beautiful part of local nature but hard on the skin. If you wear a pair of long pants you’ll will thank us for it.
We hope you enjoy this trip! We couldn’t find an option on WikiLoc with photo’s and some basic information. Therefor we took some pictures and made the description above. Hope this helps you to enjoy this really nice hike in the Cretan Hills.
Please leave a comment if you miss some information or if you have any suggestions. And give us a clap or like if you thinks this hike is worth it.
