Itinerary description

Azoghires circular

Waypoints

Parking

Room for one or two cars near Church, they are other places to pull off the road further up or lower down.

Start of route

Follow the blue paint marks.

Abandoned VDub

Unfortunately well beyond economic repair.

Derelict church

Unusual to see a church in this condition in Crete in our experience.

Trousers

The second pair of trousers that we found hanging from a gate. The others were stuffed with wool. What's all that about? You need to take the Right Hand route up the hill.

Keep following the blue dots, there's one on the rock in the right hand side of the photo.

Blue dots

Keep following the yellow blue paint dots. The terrain gets a bit "scratchy", suggest long trousers if this bothers you.

Your route is now marked with yellow and blue dots.

Path around the hill

Your path now takes you around to the north and is easy to follow. You will have passed a walled cave used to keep goats by the looks of it.

Difficult uphill section

From here upwards there is very difficult going due to the the path being allowed to become overgrown and is very steep. There are red paint spot way markers but these are difficult to see. However if you keep going upwards the best way you can find you will eventually clear the bushes and trees and come out on a steep sloping but negotiable section that takes to you the fort.

The fort comes in to view

We found our own way up the hill side which may not have been the best way to go and you might choose better routes. My route will take you to a gate in the top right hand corner of a fenced enclosure that you need to find.

Approaching the fort

The fort needs to be approached from the far side after climbing the hill.

View from the fort

Best place to enjoy the view all around and take a break. You leave the fort by the western side where there is a gate in the fence and very well marked easy route all the way to the junction up to the Cave of 99 Saints.

The first half is OK and has magnificent views. For most of that first half it was just a matter of following the blue marks. But then half way the route we got lost. Due to the blue marking we arrived a bit too low and could not find the waypoint route anymore. We searched for 1.5 hour and were then ordered by a farmer to go down because we were not allowed to cross that land to his knowledge the second part of the route could not be walked (amongst others because all of the fences). So we had to go back over local roads which would take three hours. Luckily after two hours we were able to get a lift.

Sorry you had a hard time it sounds awfull. I agree the second part is dificult, you need to take gps and follow the route carefully, there is a bit of scrambling involved. I mention this in the "Difficult up hill section" photo.

Ohne Track ist ein kurzes Stück schwierig zu finden. Super schöne Aussicht und mehrheitlich einfach.

Thanks for your review, I think you've summed it up correctly, it is a bit of an adventure but achievable.
