Itinerary description
This is a classic walk for those staying in Paleochora. Start off by getting a taxi or a bus or a lift to Azogires and make sure you meet the wonderfully eccentric Lucky at his cafe/bar (it's not hard to find it's the only thing there). Walk up the road from the bar to find the path leading down to Anidri on the right. You will cross the valley over the old Venetian bridge. Further along the other side of the valley you will pass by a Monastery which is open and fun to explore, the main rooms are locked but you can have a good poke around. The path now leads down the side of the valley to Anidri and you have splendid views across the valley as you go. At the tiny Anidri village is IMHO one of the best restaurant/cafes you could possibly hope to find. The food is all home made unique, Cretan and interesting with vegetables grown in their own garden. The vegetable meze is to die for and I'm not a vegetarian BTW. Carry on the walk down the valley which starts around the back of the church in front of you as you leave the Restaurant. The walk down the gorge ends up at the beach where you can swim, sun bathe and/or enjoy refreshments at the beach bar. The walk back to Paleochora from here is a bit of a trudge along a gravel road. You can often easily hitch a lift with people driving back from the beach, all the same, it's only about a mile and a half to end a very fulfilling day. Enjoy.
